DIVINE SURRENDERING

It was on a snowy Canadian winter’s day back in 2006, at my first Kundalini Yoga class, when I experienced a moment of divine surrendering. I was there as part of women in film forum, I’d been flown over to present my Cannes award-winning short film, part of me had bought into the whole fame story, this is it I thought, I’ve finally made it, I’m on my way. This I would come to understand was a complete ruse of the Universal Source, it had bought me there not to become a famous film maker, instead awaken me out of the illusion, and remind me of the true understanding of God, Hukum, Creation – whatever you want to it.

In those first few minutes of that class, I experienced a moment of surrender which in a way was no surrender. In other words, there was no resistance, it was if I had finally come home to a place where my ego could let go of the fight. It was a moment so unreal, so out of left field from who I believed I was and what should be, yet it when it came, it was if I’d been waiting for it my whole life. Afterwards there was no question, no doubt that the self I had come to believe as me, was gone. The weight of that old world had been lifted. My life had been taken over by a new great force, and yet it felt completely natural. For the first time my life felt as if it were unfolding exactly as it was meant to be. Past, present, and future, all part of the Divine Will.

In the West we hear the word surrender and we freak out, we think it has to do with giving up our ego to somebody else. I must surrender my power to them! It’s true there is a power dynamic, but the struggle is not with them out there, instead the real battle lies within. There are certain laws to live by, we call it divine organisation, and when we live outside or against this divine organisation, there is a clash of wills which creates conflict within, and we suffer. The struggle of our ego will versus the Divine Will. To surrender to the Divine Will takes Divine Surrendering, a conscious loving action from the heart. Real surrender needs to blossom from inside, without it you fool yourself and others. It’s another ego trip. In nature this is the inner contraction of the bud which sets the nucleus and seed of all that is to come.

Last month confronted your ego through the fire element, it burned the hidden anger disguised as pride out to transform it into humility. This 4^th month opens the airwaves to the door of the heart through the Neutral Mind and surrender with humility. April has a spectacular line up of planets, bringing a tidal wave surge of momentum shaking you up for a reality check. Along with the fire horse energy galloping you forward, all asking for a breakthrough of your well organised structures. You are being asked to find a new way through. And if not now, when?

The Karma of the 4 is doubt, confusion, hesitation, procrastination which leaves us trapped in the old box of organised belief structures. The Dharmic path of the 4, allows us to take a step across the threshold through the doorway into love. Surrender is love and love is that surrender. When we love ourselves enough to stop, breathe, listen we connect to our inner awareness and through receptivity we see even our karmic patterns are a chance to go beyond the ego’s need to know. We surrender into the not knowing. It’s often in the not knowing, we enter a space behind the curtain of the ego’s show and discover our unique manifestation. Understanding our unique manifestation, we begin to serve humanity from a place of trust.

There is a profound shift in human consciousness occurring, some are calling it the new earth. It’s a higher frequency of love, unity, and peace. What this means is the old ways no longer work, you can’t face today’s challenges with yesterday’s tools. You are being asked to find a new Aquarian way through the discomfort. Not by pushing up or against instead a bowing down from the heart. Guru Ramdas, 4^th Guru, taught yielding to the divine eliminates suffering and allows the divine wisdom to guide you. He saw surrendering not as a passive weakness but a powerful, active release of the ego to let the universe manage your destiny.

Surrender means expressing your will 100% and dedicating your will to the higher will. It’s a conscious commitment from the soul. When your soul stands in the core of your commitment, and the conscious choice to commit comes from your heart, God guides every step of your life. You are forever supported to keep up. Tuning your will to the higher will, you can never go wrong. This takes trust and is the ultimate act of love.

“Love is that surrender. When you surrender at the Lotus Feet of the Master, you become the Master. When you become the Master, you surrender your universe to the Universe. Then you become divine. When you surrender your Divinity to your Infinity you become Infinite. That is the law of love”. Yogi Bhajan

I didn’t know it back then, but that choice to attend my first ever yoga class was an act of love. It’s taken twenty years to unpack that moment and will probably take another twenty. For now, what I understand is it was my soul calling me back, asking me to confirm that I had not lost complete touch with the essence of my true purpose, my unique manifestation. It was a surrendering with no surrender, as a part of me was longing to let go. We have to be willing to lose of few battles to win the war. The moment you stop fighting yourself, you finally win the war of love, unity, and peace.

This month demands you continue to stand for your conscious decisions instead of giving up. It asks you to accept God's Will (Hukam), then the whole pain and suffering can be converted into roots. It’s time to step out of your organised structures, your victimhood, your patterns of denial, let go of the doubt, take a step, and start to participate in trust. To be in this frequency is not something you must do, rather it’s a state of being. Learn to stay in the tenderness of your heart when all we want to do is run is an acceptance of true love. Breath by breath you’re tuning in to the inner truth and sowing seeds of the True Identity.

The Sarovar (nectar tank) of Guru Ramdas is the space of the heart where we find the We-in-me, the shared sense of humanity.

Commitment and a Neutral Mind are needed for real surrender. When you surrender you are acknowledging that there is a life force greater than your ego, that’s all. God is only an excuse for us to surrender. When we surrender or when we lose our ego, we are no longer a separate entity from Existence. God is not the goal; the real goal is Divine Surrendering.
