The Winter Solstice, occurs when either of Earth's poles reaches its maximum tilt away from the Sun. This happens twice yearly, in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres. In the southern hemisphere, the Winter Solstice is the day with the shortest period of daylight and longest night of the year, when the Sun is at its lowest daily maximum elevation in the sky.
Since prehistory, the Winter Solstice has been a significant time of year in many cultures, marked by festivals, rituals, meditation, ceremony and recognised as the two most important days of the year. It marked the symbolic death and rebirth of the Sun; the gradual waning of daylight hours is reversed and begins to grow again. In Latin, solstice: sol– meaning “the sun” and sistere meaning “to make stand.”
Winter Solstice is the moment when the axis of the Earth pauses, shifts then moves in the opposite direction. For three days around the solstice points we experience the power of the standstill point and the shift of direction. As the sun stands still, powerful energy is created and available for us to access and utilise to change the direction of our lives and build on that energy for the rest of the year.
The energy of winter is a deep and potent time to go within and rest. When we rest, there’s still work going on; it's the fruitful darkness and silence out of which our soul's yearnings and new inspirations can eventually emerge.
At Winter Solstice the dark triumphs over the light, and this signifies a turning point! And yet, we are so afraid of our darkness. When negative emotions come up, they make us uncomfortable, we don’t want to feel them, instead we make ourselves wrong for feeling them and busy ourselves with outside distractions.
When we fear our own darkness, we cut ourselves off from an essential source of our own personal power. The key is not letting darkness overwhelm our lives and our thoughts but creating an understanding that darkness can be one of the greatest catalysts for personal growth and transformation. By allowing ourselves to feel our emotions and experience our own darkness, the darkness itself can become the spiritual cradle into which our inner light and new life is born.

“Winter Solstice is the most beautiful experience for the human psyche. Actually for the ten days after Solstice, you should also celebrate because during this time, all the fluids and blood change in your body. During these ten days, you are meant to eat right, live light, and be jubilant since this is when the serum in the body, the mucous membrane and the fluid in the body, change and re-create ourselves. This is why we wish to celebrate winter solstice.” Yogi Bhajan
